Whaling Museum Visit, Nantucket 2024
Today we had a lazy morning, but Philomena, John, and I rode bikes down to the center of town where they went to the thrift shop and found some treasures. Then we went to the Whaling Museum because it looked like it was going to rain. There were a lot of interesting things and exhibits there detailing Nantucket’s whaling history. Nantucket was once the whaling capital of the world in the 19th century, and the museum showcases artifacts, including a massive sperm whale skeleton that washed ashore in 1998.
When the rain let up, Philomena and John rode home while I waited for Mom to pick me up. Then we went home with dinner we picked up from Sayle’s Seafood, and Mom and I enjoyed a dinner of belly clams and crab cakes along with clam chowder. After dinner, Mom enlisted Philomena and John to clean up a bit. Great teamwork!

Lazy Sunday and Postcards, Nantucket 2024
Today was a lazy day at home. John went shopping at Stop & Shop for us, and Philomena went along to help him. Mom and I took a nap together in the middle of the day, and later Mom towed the log and hung out with John in the hammock for a while and had a beer.
We also sent postcards to our friends, the Baeks, and John wrote a postcard and made a keychain for his friend Lily.

Disc Golf with Cousins Kathy and Eli, Nantucket 2024
Today we went and played disc golf with Kathy Stevens and her grandson, Eli. Kathy is Nat’s sister, and they are Yia Yia’s first cousins, which makes them Philomena, John, and Frank’s first cousins once removed. Eli is their second cousin. The boys found out that Eli also plays baseball, so they ended up playing catch before we were done.
After that, we went and got lunch and ice cream nearby. Then the kids rode their bikes downtown while I took the bus. They went to the library and returned the books they had borrowed and got new ones. The boys then went to Children’s Beach to play pitcher and catcher. Philomena and I caught up with them later, and then we went home. Frankie fell riding his bike home, but he was brave and feels much better now.

Exploring Altar Rock and Sankaty Lighthouse, Nantucket 2024
Today Mom and John played cards in the morning, and then once the laundry was done and hung on the line, we took a ride out to Altar Rock and Sankaty Lighthouse. Altar Rock is one of the highest points on Nantucket, offering panoramic views of the island. Sankaty Head Lighthouse, built in 1850, is a historic landmark that has guided mariners for over a century.
I flew my drone and got some videos and pictures of us at Sankaty Lighthouse. We went home and relaxed. We watched The Mask again.

Beach Day, Downtown and New Teachers, Nantucket 2024
Today Mom took the kids to Dionis Beach. When they got home, the boys needed to wash all the sand off themselves. John found a “mermaid’s purse” and learned about what it is. A mermaid’s purse is the egg case of sharks, skates, and rays; it’s a tough, leathery pouch that protects the embryo until it’s ready to hatch. We also found out who the kids’ teachers will be in the fall. John’s 5th-grade teacher will be Ms. Wilcken, Frankie’s 3rd-grade teacher will be Ms. Braga, and Philomena’s 8th-grade homeroom teacher will be Mr. Hacker.
We took a walk downtown and Philomena did a workshop where she made slime at the library.
Afterward, Mom and John colored seashells, and then the boys went for a bike ride, and Frankie did some epic wheelies. Mom, Frankie, and John played cards before bed.

Baseball at the High School Field, Nantucket 2024
Today the boys went to the baseball field at the high school and played baseball for a few hours. While they were there, Philomena and I went to the Downyflake for breakfast. After that, we brought the boys frozen Cokes and Downyflake donuts. They kept playing after their snack, and we headed into town. It started raining, so Philomena rode home, and Mom came to pick me up. After that, we spent a rainy afternoon at home. We watched The Mask and started the Scooby-Doo movie.

Baseball and Beach Fun, Nantucket 2024
Today John decided to take a ride down to the Sunken Ship to see if they sell baseballs. It turns out that they do, so Frankie and Philomena rode their bikes into town, and Mom dropped me off at Children’s Beach, and we all met up there. We went back to the Sunken Ship, and John got a baseball, Frankie got a LEGO set, and then we got some lunch at the Rose and Crown. After that, we went back to Children’s Beach, where the boys played in the water for a few hours while Philomena and I relaxed. Then we went up to the Nantucket Music Center for a ukulele drop-in program; however, it looks like that was canceled, so we ended up going home instead for dinner, relaxation, and bedtime.

Disc Golf and Pool at Kitty Murtagh’s, Nantucket 2024
Today was an exciting day. In the morning, the boys rode their bikes to the disc golf course again. After a couple of hours, Mom dropped me off there, and the boys played 10 holes with me trailing behind, taking pictures and videos. After that, we rode our bikes to Kitty Murtagh’s and had lunch. The boys played a game of pool for the first time and enjoyed it. In the meantime, Mom had mowed the lawn, and then she came to pick us up. When we got home, the boys got their new shoes from Zappos and helped Mom hang up the hammock on two trees in the back of the house.

Discovering Disc Golf, Nantucket 2024
Today John and Frankie took a bike ride to the farm and then Stop & Shop. After they got home, Philomena and John took a ride and discovered a new sport: disc golf. They went to the Nantucket Disc Golf Course and even met a new friend there who taught them to play. They found a bin of free discs to play with. They also went to Island Variety, where John bought himself a wallet, and then got lunch and ice cream from a place nearby. They went back to the disc golf course and played another round before heading home. We had dinner and then a movie night—Frankie chose The LEGO Movie.
